Kids Making Money

“ART, you know, deals with that side of people’s lives where they are not aware of what they are taking in … of the judgments they are making.”

This from the London Sunday Times.

Have you been watching one of my all-time favorites, Laura Linney, doing her stuff on cable as a woman who thinks she is dying of cancer in The Big C? This is comedic drama at its best and happens on Showtime on Sunday nights at 10:30 PM EST.

Well, now Laura is back on Broadway as well in the thought-provoking drama Time Stands Still. I just loved this play about a foreign correspondent photographer, wounded in action, and what happens to her when she comes home from the Middle East and tries to begin leading a normal life. You have until January 23 to catch the great, the talented Laura Linney in person onstage. (Although there could be an extension.) And I am so proud of Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove for daring to put on an interesting play, give it a brief vacation, then bring it back again.

If only all of Broadway could be this flexible.

***

THE DYNAMIC Daryl Roth was so blown over by the Actor’s Fund/Friends Indeed benefit set up for one night only of Larry Kramer’s great play about the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, The Normal Heart, she will try to bring it back for a Broadway run. And, of course, she will try to place the fabled actor, Joe Mantello, in the leading role. Larry Kramer wrote his own self into history in this gadfly part.

Hey, kids, the Navajo Nation, the largest Indian reservation in America, is choosing its first female president. There are dirty tricks aplenty in this all-American contest. But Lynda Lovejoy has already won twice as many votes as any of her opponents and looks likely to win on November 2.

She is a 46-year-old mother of three and is a New Mexico state senator. Ms. Lovejoy is fighting allegations that she drinks, which is a big no-no in Navajo circles. The Navajo nation spreads across 26,000 square miles of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah and is home to 173,000 Navajo. The nation’s laws are overseen by the U.S. government for review.

Opposition to Ms. Lovejoy is largely that she is Catholic, married to a non-Navajo and wears business suits. But the Navajo are a matriarchal society and people introduce themselves using their mother’s clan name.

Why is the Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps star, Carey Mulligan leaving us? The actress, 25, is going back to Britain having cooled her relationship with Shia LaBeouf.

“I’m moving back to England; it’s a long story,” says Carey. “I am spending some more time here at the moment, just spending time with my family –- really,” said the actress to the Telegraph columnist Mandrake.

After being nominated for an Oscar for her role in An Education, the actress said she loved New York “maybe more than Los Angeles or London. I could live in New York. I think I’m happiest there.”

Money Making Secrets

Facebook is nicking Google's staff. Over 10 percent of Facebook's staff used to work for the Big G in the past, according to the New York Times.

Around 200 of Facebook's current employees are ex-Googlers. Facebook has roughly 1,600 employees, making the infiltration, we mean, crossover around 12.5 percent. Significant, with recent talk, especially by us, of Facebook and Google set to become bitter rivals.

A few high profile Google employees have jumped ship, such as Erick Tseng, who was Senior Product Manager for Android. He's not heading Facebook's mobile business, which may result in a Facebook branded smartphone in the future.

So what is going on to prompt Google staff to join Facebook's ranks? It could simply be that both companies share similar interests and are operating in the same sector, with people wanting a change of scenery. Maybe Facebook pays better. Or maybe Facebook is trying to steal Google's staff. Or maybe Google is trying to plant spies to steal Facebook's secrets. Or maybe we're just throwing ideas out there.

All we know for sure is that the exodus to the social notworking site represents less than one percent of Google's estimated 22,000 staff, and Google can really afford to lose a few people here and there when it's rolling in such vast sums on money.

ChaCha, a startup that answers questions on your computer or phone, has raised $20 million in a sixth round of institutional funding. The news was first reported in TechCrunch, and the company has confirmed it.

ChaCha’s “guides” answer a broad swath of questions. Right now, “trending questions” on the ChaCha site include “What does h.m.u. mean in text talk?” “Often imitated but never duplicated is the slogan what company?” and “Is there going to be a 3rd season of teen mom?” The answers are high-quality, since ChaCha pays between 3 cents and 20 cents per answer, but that also means ChaCha probably has to spend a substantial amount of cash to keep up.

The Indianapolis-based company says it answers most questions within 30 seconds and that it reaches more than 15 million users across its website, text message service, voice service, and on social networks like Twitter. It makes money through advertising.

The new round comes from investors VantagePoint Venture Partners and Rho Ventures. ChaCha has now raised a total of $72 million.

People Making Money Online

Justin Hartfield of WeedMaps is about as ballsy as entrepreneurs get. I mean that as a compliment. Not only is he building an online business that facilitates and profits off of the recreational use of marijuana– which let’s remember is still illegal in the United States– but he’s essentially rushing his small company out into the public markets, via an acquisition by the mostly-unknown but publicly-traded LC Luxuries Limited, which will build a new business around all things cannabis.

Between the anticipated closing of the deal, which will make WeedMaps essentially a publicly traded company on the Pink Sheets and California’s vote on a proposition to legalize marijuana, the next month will be huge for Hartfield– one way or another. Meanwhile revenues are soaring. WeedMaps was making $20,000 a month a year ago, made $300,000 in August and $400,000 in September– all off of just 50,000 registered users.

Obviously, the money-making potential is huge, but is there a greater moral issue here? Hartfield doesn’t see one. Hartfield was the guest on NBC’s Press:Here this week, where he discussed a unique dilemma in Silicon Valley: Having a $120 billion market to yourself in which no VCs want to invest. It’s a reality that’s driven him to this odd, back-door IPO.

It’s also helping make his company a cause. “We want to make buying a share in this company like buying a share in the legalization of marijuana cause,” he says. Hartfield — so unabashedly libertarian he could make Peter Thiel swoon– thinks markets are better ways of assessing public opinion than media or political polls. So, he argues, if people vote with their money for WeedMaps, it’ll be a proxy for how people feel about the practicality of legalization, which he sees as an inevitability. (Morality aside, I take issue with his certainty in this clip. Even in gung-ho California, some medical marijuana advocates oppose recreational legalization.)

But the deal is about more than just finding a way to go public. The new company will acquire and roll-up several smaller companies, likely also around the cannabis issue. Meanwhile, Hartfield is doing a weed/Web landgrab, taking nearly every business model that’s worked on the Web and building a weed version. His core site is like Yelp for weed, containing a database of more than 25,000 strains, where they can be found and reviews on dispensaries and headshops. He even offers an “elite” status.

The company has another site called WeedVote.com that helps get out the legalization vote, and the newly launched WeedMart.com is an online headship and he’s about to launch a new daily deals site for pot– that’s right, yet another Groupon clone, this time to get high. There’s also a feature called “Weed or Skin”– like Hot or Not but where you vote for scantily clad women or pictures of pot. I’m not kidding. While Hartfield isn’t the first to try to make money off of a vice, he revels in it more than most. “We don’t like to be hypocritical, and we don’t think there should be arbitrary differences between recreational and medicinal,” he says. This is clearly as much about the cause as it is about the company for him. Agree with his stance or not, you have to respect the conviction.

In the clip below, Hartfield talks about America’s “chronic fear of freedom” and the challenges he’s faced building this business. Go here for the full episode, which includes his rebuttal to medical marijuana advocates that say recreational legalization is bad for those who need the drug for medical reasons

To summarize an hour of dialogue, you should at some point have a product that your readers will want. You should give a lot of free content away, but even when it comes to content, you can charge for some amount, and if your content is good enough, people will pay for the premium stuff. "You can tell them about ninety percent, and they'll pay money just to get the final ten percent," so they know they have the whole picture, Clark says.

Making money blogging will not happen overnight. Sometimes it may seem like this is possible, but in reality, it takes a lot of work. "Build something that is real and something that matters to people," Rowse advises. He shared a story about how he launched a product one day and literally watched the sales roll in. It was as if he had hit a button, and the cash just started flowing, but then he realized he had been working hard up to that point for over two years, promoting the blog, writing two posts a day, doing SEO, press releases, etc. It wasn't overnight.

You're not scalable, meaning that as your audience grows and more people want to connect with you, there will be a point where it just becomes too much. You have to set boundaries, otherwise you will have no time for yourself and your family.

Eventually, you're going to have to "get real" about how many meaningful connections you can make in a day, Simone says, adding, "That's part of growing up in social media.”

When they say "no one actually wants that much authenticity," they mean that nobody cares about what you did last night, who you were with, what you had for breakfast, etc. In other words, don't show everybody everything about yourself, because you're not writing for you. You're writing for them. Be who you want to be for your audience.

Ultimately, you're blogging and using social media to sell, but you can't just go around selling to people, because they won't have it. It just doesn't work. You have to make them want to buy. "You're selling yourself," says Clark. If you provide enough value to your audience, they will want to buy what you have to offer if it expands upon the value you're already giving them. "The content is the marketing," he says.

Just having a blog is not a business. If you want it to be a business you have to treat it like one, Rowse says. This is basically an extension of number 2.

The most important of the seven points is that no one is reading your blog. As Simone says, there are hundreds of millions of blogs, and that includes blogs on your topic. You have to write it in a way that is fresh, and either entertaining or informative. The good news is that you don't need "monster traffic". You just need a good, steady core audience for advertising to do well.

You just need a good, steady core audience for advertising to do well.

foreclosure defense

Until now, only a handful of depositions from robo-signers have come to light. But the sheer volume of the new depositions will make it more difficult for financial institutions to argue that robo-signing was an aberrant practice in a handful of rogue back offices.

Judges are unlikely to look favorably on a bank that claims paperwork flaws don't matter because the borrower was in default on the loan, said Kendall Coffey, a former Miami U.S. attorney and author of the book "Foreclosures."

"There has to be a cornerstone of integrity to the process," Coffey said.

Bank of America responded to Tiktin's depositions by re-affirming that an internal review has shown that its foreclosures have been accurate. "This review will ensure we have a full understanding of any potential issues and quickly address them," Bank of America spokesman Dan Frahm said. Frahm added that, on average, the bank's foreclosure customers have not made a payment in more than 18 months.

JP Morgan Chase spokesman Thomas Kelly said the bank has requested that courts not enter into any judgments until the bank had reviewed its procedures. But Kelly added that the bank believes that all the underlying facts of the cases involved in the document fraud allegations are true.

Litton Loan Servicing did not respond to a request for comment.

Even before the foreclosure scandal broke, the housing market was in the midst of an ugly detoxification. Now the escalating crisis is likely to prolong the housing depression for at least another few years. The allegations are opening the entire chain of foreclosure proceedings to legal challenge. Some foreclosures could be overturned. Others could be deemed illegal.

For a housing recovery to occur, all the foreclosed properties -- which could account for 40 percent of all residential sales by 2012 -- need to be re-scrutinized by the banks and resold on the market. Now, with so much inventory under a legal threat, the process will become severely delayed.

"This just adds more uncertainty to the whole mortgage process, so buyers are asking themselves: do I want to buy a home in this environment?" says Cris deRitis, director of credit analytics at Moody's Analytics. "We need to fix these issues before the economy can recover."

Though some have chalked up the foreclosure debacle to an overblown case of paperwork bungling, the underlying legal issues are far more serious. Yes, swearing that you've reviewed documents you've never seen is a legal offense. But at the center of the foreclosure scandal looms something much larger: the question of who actually owns the loans and who has the right to foreclose upon them. The paperwork issues being raised by lawyers and attorneys generals have the potential to blight not just the titles of foreclosed properties but also those belonging to homeowners who have never missed a mortgage payment.

So far, JP Morgan Chase, PNC Financial and Litton Loan Servicing have stopped some foreclosure proceedings in 23 states. Bank of America and GMAC, recently renamed Ally, have extended their moratoriums to all 50 states. Wells Fargo and Citigroup have said they are continuing with foreclosures, adding that they are confident in their documents and processes.

But Citigroup has now backpedaled some on that assertion. The bank sent out a press release Tuesday that it was no longer using the law firm of "foreclosure king" David Stern, now under investigation by the Florida attorney general's office. "Pending the outcome of the AG's investigation, Citi is not referring new matters to this firm," the bank said in an e-mailed statement.

Late last week, in an interview with the Florida attorney general, a former senior paralegal in Stern's firm described a boiler-room atmosphere in which employees were pressured to forge signatures, backdate documents, swap Social Security numbers, inflate billings and pass around notary stamps as if they were salt.

Stern's lawyer, Jeffrey Tew, did not respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, the public outrage continues to mount. In what is perhaps a sign of things to come, a Simi Valley, Calif., couple and their nine children broke into their foreclosed home over the weekend and moved back in, according to television station KABC of Simi Valley. The couple, Jim and Danielle Earl, say they were working with the bank to catch up on payments until they discovered a $25,000 difference between what they owed and what the bank said they owed. The family was evicted from their Spanish-style two-story in July. The home has been sold, and the new owner was due to move in soon.

The Earls and their attorney now allege that they were victims of fraudulent paperwork.

Yesterday, five homeowners in the state of Maine filed a class action suit against GMAC Mortgage, accusing them of filing knowingly false certifications for foreclosure, and false affadavits which back up the documents. Maine is one of the 23 states where judicial sign-off is required to move ahead with a foreclosure, and where GMAC (now Ally Financial) has suspended evictions.

In depositions of GMAC/Ally officials as well as those at top mortgage lenders across the country, employees have admitted that they do not spend any time verifying the accuracy of the foreclosure documents, and often use a “robo-signer” who looks at the materials for less than 30 seconds and signs up to 10,000 affadavits a month.

The lawsuit alleges that thousands of Maine homeowners have lost their homes unfairly due to judgments based on false documents, and that most of them had no attorney operating in their defense. GMAC has been sanctioned in a Maine court for their “high-volume and careless approach to affidavit signing.” Local attorneys, along with the offices of Maine Attorneys Saving Homes, the National Consumer Law Center and the Center for Responsible Lending are working on the case.

Bank of America, the largest holder of mortgages in the country, yesterday admitted to this practice and suspended foreclosure processes while they review the documents. They plan to “amend all affidavits in foreclosure cases that have not yet gone to judgment,” a process that could take months or even years. Citi and Wells Fargo, the only major lenders which have not slowed their foreclosures yet, have defended their documentation actions, with Wells Fargo standing by the accuracy of their affadavits. If all lenders eventually submit to review, it could put on hold the future of 4.37 million households either in foreclosure or severe delinquency.

The lenders often just service the loans, without owning the title. Private investment pools or even the government, in the form of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, often own the homes. Sometimes the owner cannot be determined because of securitization and sloppy processes during the housing bubble, leading to foreclosures by servicers who cannot establish ownership.

Connecticut, a judicial foreclosure state, has suspended all foreclosures for 60 days while the Attorney General investigates. California, a non-judicial state, has asked GMAC/Ally and JPMorgan Chase, another lender reviewing their documents, to halt their foreclosure operations. Asm. Ted Lieu, the state legislator who wrote the law that requires lenders in California to try to contact borrowers and document the outcome before any foreclosure, said yesterday that the state should call for a foreclosure moratorium.

You had enough money when you bought the place. In fact you had more than enough. You calculated it out yourself. You didn't want to go any more than one fifth of your income. So, you found a house and a loan package that you could support and afford and yet stay well within your budget.

It's a beautiful home. There are plenty of options for growth and a great neighborhood to raise your children in. Just enough land, ten acres, to allow for a garage some time in the future and not so much that you will be burdened with excessive upkeep. Though yours is not waterfront, on a good day, you can see the neighboring inland lake. Simply ideal you think. You are feeling a bit proud of yourself at having made such a great selection.

Your wife and you have worked hard for the past five years and have saved everything you possibly could just to get your piece of the earth. You've both worked two jobs while still trying to take care of your newest addition to the family, your now, two year old son. Your savings continued to grow and tempted you the full time but you withstood the urge to spend and you successfully saved it all for this moment.

Fortunately for you, your home based business turned out very successful. Who would have thought a business consultant could support a family, buy two new cars and even get a mortgage on a new home while doing something he loved so much. But, the means justifies the end, and here you are, sitting on the porch of your new piece of Americana, your family home.

Suddenly, the climate chills and your brightening glow darkens. Your customers begin to cancel appointments. Some of them close their doors, others move out of the state or even out of the country. You frantically call them day after day only to hear things like "I can't even afford to buy raw material, how can I afford to bring you in." Your monthly activity falls from a lucrative 20 days a month to an existing 10 days a month, to a "get behind" 5 days. Now you find it difficult to schedule even one or two days a month.

You sell your second vehicle, stop several services, and cancel all magazines and newspapers and professional organization memberships. You and wife quit going out, no more lunches, no more weekend movies, and no more client entertainment evenings. You find yourself drawing on what is left of your now meager savings just to keep the mortgage and utilities paid. Soon, you find yourself prioritizing between the mortgage and the light bill; which one gets paid first?

This month you miss the mortgage payment and wait with bated breath to hear what the bank has to say. You are scolded and reminded of your responsibilities. You go to Mom and Dad and borrow the next month mortgage payment. Now you are already one month behind and will stay that way until something turns around.

You finally face the inevitable and put your life's dream up for sale. Your real estate agent suggests you drop your asking price even before they ever advertise your home for sale. You follow their direction and drop it just low enough to pay off your loan. You won't make any money but you will get the loan paid off.

You patiently await the surge of business you expect to come in from your customers but it never materializes. You sell your lawn tractor and the last of your "special" toys, you and your wife's matching golf clubs. You clean your two car garage out of all the tools, toys and implements that compliment a gentleman farmer's estate and park your one lonely family vehicle in the middle of it. You have long since traded in your second new car and settled for a nice looking, though eight year used, sedan.

One day you find yourself in the food stamp line. What happened? The next day you are applying for assistance? How could this be? You owned my own business. You were on top of the world. Now all that is left is your beautiful home; with three late payments to its credit and a letter from the bank threatening foreclosure. It is listed for sale but even if it sold it would be a "short sale." That's where the property sells for less than what it is worth. The bank has assured you that you would not owe anything extra but neither would you recoup your 20% down payment.

Facing foreclosure? Facing foreclosure you sit down with your wife across the table from you. You hold hands; you look each other in the eyes, watery, reddened eyes, and breathe a heavy sigh. You have each other, still. Now, more than ever you need each other. You are facing the greatest loss of your short life together. You pray your losses never get any worse than this but to lose your home was going to be a major blow, a numbing blow.

You can do no more. You have no more resources. There is nothing more you can turn off, or reduce, or quit or sell; you have done it all. You had the letter in hand and the regret in heart. You tried and you lost. Nothing more can save you.

This is all too familiar a scenario in America today. For awhile, everybody was willing to get as creative as they had to, simply to get you to take out a loan and buy a house. It didn't matter if you really had the wherewithal to eventually pay the loan back or not. The objective was to get the financing secured. Then, on top of that, our economy falls apart. Companies close, layoffs sky rocket, people quit buying, banks go belly-up, and people lose their savings and retirements. Financially, everybody's broke.

Facing foreclosure you will find yourself mysteriously alone. This is one of the greatest American tragedies yet, where is all the help? We pay 9/11 survivors almost 2 million dollars a family, we buy Katrina victims homes and give them jobs, America is on site at almost every disaster there is, except this one. Everybody turns their backs on the wretch who has allowed himself to be foreclosed upon.

Facing foreclosure? You will face it by yourself. Nobody will be by your side. You will go through the downsizing, the shame of poverty and the pain of loss by yourself. Your one best defense during this entire time is to keep your spouse close to you, stay close to your spouse, depend entirely upon one another and make it work! Whatever becomes of you and your situation - make it work! I did, my wife did, and today we are a fraction of what we once were but we are happy and we still have one another. It can happen.

internet marketing

Digital marketing budgets are expected to increase steadily during the next few years, according to Datran Media’s Annual Marketing & Media Survey, which reaches out to more than 5,000 marketing executives from Fortune 500 brands, top publishers, and leading advertising and media agencies.

This is good news for those of you hoping to break into the digital marketing industry. Whether you’re passionate about search, affiliate, social media, or another area of marketing, there are a few things you can do to prove your worthiness to prospective employers.

We asked five industry insiders about their top tips for aspiring digital marketers. Find their suggestions below and add your own in the comments.

1. Get Hands-On Marketing Experience

A degree in marketing or communications can take you a distance, but most employers are looking for candidates with marketing experience, whether that’s from a previous job, internship or side project. If you already have work experience in the marketing world, congratulations. For the rest of you, internships or other projects will be key.

“Any hands-on involvement with campaign creation, analytics, or optimization can be extremely beneficial to aspiring digital marketers,” says Traci Kuiphoff, online marketing manager at BareNecessities.com. “If you’re in school or a recent grad, the best way to gain experience is to do an internship at a company or agency that has a department or focus in online or digital marketing. Not only do you get real world hands-on experience, but it’s also great to put on your resume when you’re ready for a full-time position.”

If you are in college, look for paid or for-school-credit marketing internships at your college’s job fairs, via job search sites, and on social media sites. You could even land your next gig through Twitter.

If you don’t land an internship or find a position of interest, create your own project or enter a marketing contest. While studying marketing and international business at NYU Stern’s Undergraduate School of Business, a classmate and I entered the John Caples Student Campaign of the Year contest and created a digital marketing campaign for Pentel. Our campaign included a mix of digital, social and direct marketing communications, along with thoroughly gathered success metrics. Not only did we win first place, which included summer internships and a cash prize, but we also met industry experts who have acted as mentors to us.

2. Know the Lingo

Being able to analyze marketing campaigns and understand what worked or didn’t is the key role of a digital marketer — in order to do that, you’ll need to know (and love) the industry jargon.

“Understanding metrics on the web is key,” says Naishi Zhang, assistant marketing manager at Barnes & Noble. “The Internet provides so many ways of analyzing user behavior, and knowing how to gather and interpret data is important for success. Read widely and learn the lingo, so when someone asks about the CTR of a banner ad or the number of page views a landing page received, you’ll be ready.”

Mastering marketing terminology and metrics, and knowing what they mean, will take time and practice, but you can get a basic knowledge by picking up a marketing 101 textbook or attending an introductory course. Check out local college or continuing education courses. If that isn’t an option, the class='blippr-nobr'>Internetclass="blippr-nobr">Internet is at your disposal. About.com’s glossary of marketing terms and HubSpot’s glossary of social media marketing terms are both very useful for beginners, and you should also read some of the top marketing blogs to get your daily fill of information.

3. Nurture Your Personal Online Presence

Rick Bakas, director of social media marketing at St. Supéry Vineyards and Winery said he believes a person’s online presence can be a major deciding factor on whether an aspiring digital marketer makes the cut for a job. “If an employer is deciding between two candidates,” he notes, “they might go with the person with the strong following online. Build your personal brand online. You have to show you can build your personal brand if you’re going to build someone else’s.”

Your personal brand is value-added in the job market.

“Your online clout is sometimes referred to as ’social currency,’” he continues. “In other words, there’s a value associated with your online personal brand. Increased value carries as much weight as a great resume. A high Klout.com score for example, will help you stand out and validate what your resume says about you.”

Your Klout score is a number between 0 and 100 that measures the size of your engaged audience, the likelihood that they will amplify your messages, and your overall influence within your network. Bigger isn’t always better. Bakas explains, “Aspiring marketers would do well to grow an engaged online following, not necessarily a large online following. Again, Klout.com is a great tool to evaluate the strength of your online presence.”

4. Dabble in Everything, Specialize in Something

There isn’t just one career path in marketing. You can choose to work for an agency, with an in-house team, or start your own firm. There are multiple marketing disciplines, including affiliate, search, social media, e-mail, mobile, and display marketing, to name a few. Teams come in all sizes — some in which teammates specialize in certain areas, and others where a team can be composed of just one stellar know-it-all.

The best way to get a taste of all of the options is to dabble in a bit of everything. “Digital marketing agency experience can be extremely valuable — at an agency you can be exposed to all avenues of digital marketing from paid search, social media, mobile and everything in between,” Kuiphoff advises. ”Most likely, you’ll touch a number of different accounts which can help you choose a vertical focus or specialty.”

Once you have a base knowledge in each area of marketing, you’ll be better equipped to choose a more specific path of focus. Having a specialty enables you to hone your skills in that area and become an expert, which is a valuable asset to potential employees.

5. Attend Industry Meetups and Conferences

“Put the ’social’ in social media and spend time engaging with people in the real world,” Bakas says. “Go to lots of events to create or nurture quality interactions that can later continue online. Use plancast.com to see which upcoming events are worth going to. These experiences are ripe with opportunities to meet other digital marketers. The strongest relationships are the ones nurtured online and offline.”

Kuiphoff adds, “Digital marketing conferences not only provide a great networking opportunity, but most offer in-depth workshops that can enhance your skill set.”

Some worthwhile conferences to consider include SXSW, Search Marketing Expo, Web 2.0 Expo, Ad Age Digital Conference, ad:tech, Search Engine Strategies and Pivot.

If you’re not into the hustle and bustle of industry conferences, you can consider a more toned-down approach by attending or organizing your own Meetups. There are thousands of marketing Meetups around the world. The NY Entrepreneurs Business Network and San Francisco Entrepreneur Meetup are two of the largest.

6. Keep a Pulse on the News

Because of the nature of the Internet, digital marketing is ever-changing. If you don’t keep up with the latest trends and news, it shows in interviews and on the job. Sarah Hofstetter, SVP of emerging media and client strategy at digital marketing agency 360i, says it well:

“Remember that standing still is going backwards. Yes, it’s an adage that has been used for years to inspire ambition, but it is blatantly obvious in the digital landscape. Not only does that technology evolve at a lightening pace that transcends Moore’s law, but consumer behavior is shifting at a radical pace, and media consumption becomes more and more fragmented.

“Being on top of consumer behavior –- understanding what they’re doing online, what motivates them and their social and mobile behavior –- and staying ahead of that by learning what’s in the market and what’s on the come, will help ensure you don’t get stuck on the sidelines when interviewing for jobs in digital marketing.”

Kuiphoff recommends subscribing to industry blogs and newsletters to stay on top of the latest news. Some of my personal favorites include Ad Age, ClickZ, eMarketer, BrandWeek and AdWeek.

7. Get Technical

You won’t be coding programs or building full websites as a digital marketer, but you will need to work with developers and designers or other web specialists to communicate your marketing design needs. A basic knowledge of how the web works, HTML, and one or two programming languages, such as class='blippr-nobr'>PHPclass="blippr-nobr">PHP, JavaScript, CSS and Ruby, will help you understand the current boundaries and opportunities that will affect your marketing campaigns.

“It’s important for anyone working in the digital world, whether it’s marketing or designing features for a product, to have a basic understanding of coding,” suggests Dharmishta Rood, a research assistant at Harvard Business School and fellow at the Center for Future Civic Media at MIT. “There are great experiential benefits from understanding the underlying technologies that shape what we do online — it’s easier to understand how users can interact with content, what is possible for design with things like CSS and JavaScript, and understand the nuances of basic technical terminology.”

8. Perfect Your Resume

Everyone needs a resume; what you do with it is up to you. To help you stand out, here are a few tips from our digital marketing experts:

  • “Demonstrate that you can produce results and work in a fast-paced environment, whether you’ve had previous digital experience or not. Don’t be afraid to include things about yourself that may not be directly related to the job. Resumes get scanned quickly, so it always helps to inject something creative and clever.” — Naishi Zhang, assistant marketing manager, Barnes & Noble
  • “One way you can make your resume stand out is to get certified. class='blippr-nobr'>Googleclass="blippr-nobr">Google has a certification program for Adwords. If you have a paid search marketing focus this can help assure a client/employer that you’re proficient in the system.” — Traci Kuiphoff, online marketing manager, BareNecessities.com
  • “I’m a big believer in making sure your resume is on LinkedInclass="blippr-nobr">LinkedIn, and to have recommendations on LinkedIn. Start asking for recommendations soon. LinkedIn is like your digital resume. Make sure the facts match up. Also, Google your name to see what comes up — your prospective employers will.” — Rick Bakas, director of social media marketing, St. Supéry Vineyards and Winery
  • “Use keywords to describe your previous experience that make sense for the specific job you’re applying for — if the job description or department does ’social media outreach’ and your description of all those Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter @replies, Facebookclass="blippr-nobr">Facebook messages and moderated blog post comments is currently called ‘customer service,’ this does not play up your strengths as a digital marketer. Use common sense though. If their keywords don’t match your experience, don’t write anything untruthful, and consider doing things to get the types of experience for the jobs you want, such as volunteering to help with the social media of a non-profit whose cause you support.” — Dharmishta Rood, research assistant, Harvard Business School

To showcase your skills alongside multimedia and other online assets, check out some digital alternatives to the paper resume, including video resumes, VisualCVs, social resumes and LinkedIn profiles.

9. Let Curiosity and Passion Drive You

“Sure, it’s great to know about Facebook, iAds and whatever is coming next from Silicon Valley,” Hofstetter points out, “but when we’re looking for key talent at 360i, nothing matters to us more than intellectual curiosity and passion…In a business where answers and solutions aren’t always obvious, you need to be innately curious (about everything) and obsessed with the ‘why’ behind the ‘what.’ ”

It may sound cheesy at first, but she has a point. Without inquisitiveness and zeal, we’re just work drones on a mission to take over the Internet. Plus, these traits have a positive effect on the way we work, Hofstetter says:

“People who have these qualities can innovate and identify trends from seemingly ordinary data — they’re the first to try new things (platforms, tools, technology) and think about how marketers can benefit from them. They don’t always have the answers, but when you’re being asked to do never-been-done-before things, there isn’t a rulebook. That’s why when we’re recruiting, we look for people who know how to ask the right questions.

10. Unplug for Your Sanity

Staring at a computer screen all day long can take a toll on your body, mind and social life. Get away from that monitor and breathe for crying out loud!

Bakas advocates getting out every once in a while to work on who you are as a person outside of work. “Because transparency is important, it’s important to be a good person in the real world,” he says. “It’ll translate into the digital world — you can’t fake being a good person if you’re a jerk in real life. Unplug for your own sanity, but also to continue growing as a person in life.”

I second that. Now, get out of here and get a job.

The All-New 2011 Mitsubishi Motors Outlander Sport is Set to Become the 'World's First Online Test Drive'

CYPRESS, Calif., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Starting November 1st and continuing through November 10th, 2010, Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA), will host Mitsubishi Live Drive, the World's First Online Test Drive of an actual vehicle utilizing interactive remote control of the company's latest automotive creation, the all-new 2011 Outlander Sport.

Residents of the United States who are 18 years and older with a valid driver's license will be able to register to have the chance to take a virtual jump behind the wheel to drive the all-new, affordably-priced 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, a handsome and sure-footed 5-passenger compact crossover vehicle (CUV) with numerous available high-tech features normally associated with expensive high-end vehicles that starts at only $18,495. Available amenities include a panoramic sunroof with LED accent lighting; a 710-watt Rockford-Fosgate® sound system with 10-in. subwoofer; a 40GB HDD DVD-based navigation system with a large, 7-in. touch-screen, real-time traffic and storage for up to 3,000 songs; a quick-shifting continuously-variable transmission (CVT) with magnesium-alloy steering column mounted paddle shifters; One-touch Start/Stop (OSS) engine switch; and an electronically-controlled All-Wheel Control (AWC) system, to name but a few.

Using a combination of remote control software and hardware and a unique system interface, participants will be able to take an actual 2011 Outlander Sport for a virtual spin on a closed course from their personal computers. "We have worked hard to devise a truly innovative marketing campaign utilizing cutting edge technologies to recreate a genuine Mitsubishi-experience that engages consumers upfront about the new 2011 Outlander Sport and the Mitsubishi Motors brand," said Gregory Adams, Vice President of Marketing MMNA. Working with our creative advertising agency 180 LA, our digital agency-of-record, Schematic, a WPP company, and partners B-Reel, a leading production company that specializes in superlative media for television, digital signage and internet campaigns, and world-renowned experts Dr. James Brighton (robotics) and Simon Cave (web design), this team has combined multiple point of view (POV) video cameras onboard the Outlander Sport, advanced electronic receivers and state-of-the-art servo motors to control the vehicle's dynamics and sync it with precision GPS mapping to allow participants the remarkable opportunity to drive Mitsubishi's hot new crossover via interactive remote control.

"We see this project as part of the ever-expanding blur between the virtual world and the physical world," noted William Gelner, Executive Creative Director at 180 LA. "A prime example of how technology continues to evolve the way we approach even the simplest experiences, like test-driving a car."

The online test drive is part of an integrated marketing effort that kicks off October 15th through January and includes television, print, digital and direct mail.

Participants will enjoy the feeling of literally being in the driver's seat. This experience gives the driver almost total control over the Outlander Sport. Drivers will be able to experience many of the Outlander Sport's deluxe features while performing the test drive, plus enjoy the challenge of collecting vehicle "feature pods" while learning about this crossover's cool tech features and amenities.

Those wanting to participate in the World's First Online Test Drive can start signing up on October 15 at the car's microsite, www.outlandersport.com, to obtain a code that can be used to queue for the live test drive on opening day, November 1st.

The Internet is bursting at the seams with all kinds of do-it-yourself marketing advice and help. That's good and bad if you need marketing coaching for your online business.

While you have plenty of choices for free information, it takes an incredible amount of your time to sift through all that information and separate facts from hype.

First, you have to find the right answers to your specific marketing problem. Next comes the implementation, which can present its own set of new problems and then comes the waiting to see the results.

Often, things don't work out the way you had planned and you are back to square one - seeking the right marketing advice. All you want to do is get up and running quickly so you can make money.

If you are feeling like you're spinning your wheels, then may be it's time to look for an Internet marketing coach to mentor you. The problem is that most marketing gurus charge you an arm and a leg for their services.

The good news is that you can invest in online marketing coaching one step at a time. Let me explain that concept in more details.

Let's say you have done the initial legwork and figured out a niche that you want to get into. You are on a shoestring budget like most startups, which means do-it-yourself (DiY) marketing is the way for you.

The biggest help you need right now is for someone to show you the steps. In other words give you the "how to" instructions and not some marketing theory.

Start by approaching a DiY marketing coach who offers video tutorials on specific topics like how to navigate your Cpanel, how to upload files using a free FTP program, how to create an XML site map and submit it to Google and other major search engines or how to get more exposure and drive targeted traffic.

These video tutorials usually cost $17 to $27. Use them to not only learn how to accomplish tasks yourself but also to evaluate the quality of the marketing help you are getting from that person at a relatively low cost and little risk since most Internet marketers offer a money back guarantee.

Then, as you progress beyond the basic housekeeping chores of setting up your online business, it is time for you to seek more marketing coaching for things like keyword research, long-tail versus primary keywords, optimizing your website, writing a high converting sale letter, building your mailing list, forming joint ventures and a host of other solid marketing advice.

Here again, you can start by taking baby steps. Look for a coach who offers email coaching at an affordable cost and who will answer your marketing question within 24 hours or less. They key here is for you to be as specific as possible in framing your question. Don't be tempted to ask a general question like "how can I make $1,000 by the end of the month?" You are likely to get a very generic answer that may not help you get there.

The next step up is to join some kind of a group coaching membership program. These typically cost around $47 to $97 a month and you interact with the marketing coach personally via email, online meetings and webinars. Sometimes such coaching memberships also offer a user forum where you get to interact with other members and get free advice that way.

The ultimate upgrade is the one-on-one coaching or mentoring where the marketing coach tailors the sessions to your exact business needs. This kind of a coaching program obviously costs a lot more but is well worth it if you are looking for more strategic marketing help that can really grow your online business.

Before you sign up for any one-on-one coaching, make sure you have an initial conversation with the coach. This is where you evaluate him/her to make sure there's a good fit. A good marketing coach will the do same with you, he/she wants to make sure they can work with you too. Don't be offended if the coach starts asking you some probing questions too.

Avoid chasing the proverbial rainbow on the Internet by seeking marketing advice from a proven Internet marketing coach. A truly productive coaching relationship will do wonders for your business and without the frustrations of wasting your time and money.
