personal finance blog

To many people Facebook is a tool to announce what they are doing or what they have done, yet to some Zambians, it is being used as ‘Agony Aunt’ from which they are seeking advice on many social problems affecting them.

Facebook seems to have filled up the vacuum that Zambians newspapers have failed to fill up. For starters, Zambian newspapers do not have the luxury of space to provide such a service as most of them only go up to 12 pages comprising both editorial and advertising content.

Editorially, the pages are divided into two to three news pages, a business page, a foreign page and a features page, which also carries the editorial and letters columns and one or two features, and a sports page. The rest of the space is dedicated to advertising which means that people seeking advice on personal matters such as marriage cannot be accommodated.

A social work graduate from the University of Zambia, Tina Banda, started a Facebook page called Real Life and Hot Issues Discussion Forum with Tina Banda on which a number of topics are posted everyday and responses given by other Facebook users.

The objective of the Real Life and Hot Issues Discussions is:

Our Ultimatum objective is to shape people’s lives positively and to become the world’s most effective BLOG in educating the public on Real Life issues.

The group focuses on:

OUR focus will be on INFIDELITY,MOTIVATION,JESUS & THE BIBLE TEACHINGS, POLITICS,FINANCE,SOCIAL -ECONOMICAL ISSUES,MARRIAGE /RELATIONSHIPS AND SEX, YOUTH PROBLEMS,EDUCATION,ENTERTAINMENT,CURRENT & HISTORICAL EVENTS,GLOBALISATION,BUSSINESS,TECHNOLOGY,LEGAL ISSUES,ECOLOGICAL ISSUES,FASHION,GOSSIP,CLIMATE CHANGE AND LOVE.We have chosen to come up with the afore mentioned categories as there has been various news on the same issues all over the world…..

A typical contribution goes like this:

Some men are fond of having a permanent girlfriend besides (the) wife. Some just decide to marry as many wives as they want (Due to GREEDY/SELFISH). Must polygamy be encouraged? Can a man genuinely love 2 women the same way? How fair is it to us WOMEN? READ STORY BELOW AND ADVISE Maturely.

Tina i need help very much. Am 33yrs old woman with three kids that i love so very much, i have been married for seven yrs now, and its been a sad stiuation that when my husband was transfered to mufulira he completly changed, he no loger sl…eeps at home, he has inpregnanted his workmet and now he has even shifted to her house and they are staying together, he realy visits his children and now the children are asking me wether i chessed there dad, the whole family have tried and have failed to convince him, he keeps on saying that i love them both and yet i cant see that love for me in him, non of his family members are happy abt this and they had a kitchen party and all his family members did not even attend it, i love this man i miss everything abt him, he pays rent for us and gives us his ration money but not as he used to give out, but i miss having that sweet thing in bed you know, i stay with his brother and i should comfess that i have stated going out with a diferent guy in the hood, and his young brother is suspecting that and he is in support but i feel guilt cause i have never done it before, please help what should i do? go on cheating on him or just relax until he comes back into his senses?

Please help me am dieing with this!!![sick].

A typical response from users goes like this:

Mwenda Sitali says:

You have bn brilliant so far but you ar now messing up yourself.i know its difficult and your ar missing your chocolates in bed.The best thing to do ask your husband to free u up(divorce) so that you can go and look for chocolates elsewhere with a free mind.Your husband is not being fair with u.He is getting his chocolates and you aint getting anything(selfish zambian men)Thats mental torture since you also have a nice taste for chocolates.merry xmas bt no chocs for you.lo[sic]

Meza Mphande says:

Dear Lady: Yours is a familiar case that has happened to many women out there in marriages. It unfortunately has been a trend and other people have come to allude to the conclusion that this happens at some stage in marriage life. But my advi…se is that DO NOT go on with this relationship with this man you are seeing now as you are now doing the very THING you are fighting against your husband.Correctly,so he is very wrong in his actions, regardless of what his side of the story could be becoz marriage is a high institution and there exists channels to solve marital problems that could be of a personal nature between the two of you. Remember, despite all this, you are still legal husband & Wife as you have not divorced. So for now, with all this turmoil, you will continue to devote to your husband.Remain faithful to yourself and him.

If you feel the betrayal is unbearable and cant continue living with him, then you can seek divorce in the courts and set yourself free to start another relationship, and be respected. From your letter, you still love him despite all this, so remain faithful for now, until when you decide to take the step i have put above.

Another topic on the discussion board is about lobola (bride price):

Should lobola correspond to the amount of investment that parents spent on the woman?

Pkapanya Kapanya says:

Nice one Tina! I dont think so. The man marrying is also worth quite something in terms of investment from his family. Id say it should just be enuf to try and compensate for the wman not being home close at hand to help her family freely unlike when she is with the husband and her key responsibilities shift to the man's family. However, i would want mine to be just enuf for me to be able to return incase thngs dnt work out or am not kept well. lol!

Victor Chanda says lobola is not a price for a commodity:

Tina, lobola is not compensation neither is it a price for a commodity. It is a TOKEN of appreciation to the woman's family on how well groomed she is. undersevedly this commercialisation is a misinterpretation of the basis on which this was founded. We are talking of a human being not cattle, to be paid by the highest bidder… Over the years a lot of distortion on this have evolved including the women putting their own price tags. A woman can be formally educated but that does not make her a good wife there a lot of attributes which make a woman a good wife.

The latest topic at the time of writing this post is about a man who had to forge a marriage certificate to register his son as dependant at work and now he wants to marry. The man says:

The certificate bears no signature only our names and name of marrying officer and the witness plus church date stump. A layer said he can challenge her in court but still i will be charged with forgery which in this case i may end up in jail and my employers cant tolerate it, this i know. This will cost me more than i can bear. I offered a lumpsome to make her keep quite but she refused saying all she want is me taking her as my wife thus threatening my fiancee. I forged it coz i loved her but not for a wife coz she isnt a marriage type. We agreed that child maitainance is the allowance she gets which is more than k2.7m per month. Plz what more can a man do to an ex

Asked what motivated 27 year-old Tina, a sales and marketing executive of a Zambian-based Kenyan company, to start Real life & Hot Issues?

She said she was motivated to start the Facebook version of Agony Aunt because of her passion to assist humanity in stressful social situations and occurrences:

I have always wanted to play a role in shaping peoples’ lives, laying [sic] information and enhancing decision making skills in people, motivate the low spirited/hopeless people in society and learn more on cultural diversity and how people from different countries share their perceptions/cultural values and traditions.

I also do not like seeing people go through emotional stress/suffering due to social problems because I have seen how we women are vulnerable in most situations and we fail to open up even to friends or relatives. I always thought bringing out hot issues of the voiceless women/men will always help one or two people on social networks like Facebook and now I get a lot of mails in my Facebook inbox just to have them posted on the Real Life wall so they can get various responses and experiences from other people.

“It is for the above reasons that I developed a passion to talk about real life issues that people got through and other hot issues of humanity affecting society.

Jeff Attwood:

Coding Horror: Trouble In the House of Google: If these dime-store scrapers were doing so well and generating so much traffic on the back of our content – how was the rest of the web faring? My enduring faith in the gravitational constant of Google had been shaken.... I can't help noticing that we're not the only site to have serious problems with Google search results in the last few months.... Anecdotally, my personal search results have also been noticeably worse lately. As part of Christmas shopping for my wife, I searched for "iPhone 4 case" in Google. I had to give up completely on the first two pages of search results as utterly useless, and searched Amazon instead.

People whose opinions I respect have all been echoing the same sentiment -- Google, the once essential tool, is somehow losing its edge. The spammers, scrapers, and SEO'ed-to-the-hilt content farms are winning.

Like any sane person, I'm rooting for Google in this battle, and I'd love nothing more than for Google to tweak a few algorithmic knobs and make this entire blog entry moot. Still, this is the first time since 2000 that I can recall Google search quality ever declining, and it has inspired some rather heretical thoughts in me -- are we seeing the first signs that algorithmic search has failed as a strategy? Is the next generation of search destined to be less algorithmic and more social?

It's a scary thing to even entertain, but maybe gravity really is broken...

Vivek Wadhwa:

Why We Desperately Need a New (and Better) Google: This semester, my students at the School of Information at UC-Berkeley researched the VC system from the perspective of company founders. We prepared a detailed survey; randomly selected 500 companies from a venture database; and set out to contact the founders. Thanks to Reid Hoffman, we were able to get premium access to LinkedIn—which was very helpful and provided a wealth of information.  But some of the founders didn’t have LinkedIn accounts, and others didn’t respond to our LinkedIn “inmails”. So I instructed my students to use Google searches to research each founder’s work history, by year, and to track him or her down in that way.

But it turns out that you can’t easily do such searches in Google any more. Google has become a jungle: a tropical paradise for spammers and marketers. Almost every search takes you to websites that want you to click on links that make them money, or to sponsored sites that make Google money. There’s no way to do a meaningful chronological search.

We ended up using instead a web-search tool called Blekko. It’s a new technology and is far from perfect; but it is innovative and fills the vacuum of competition with Google (and Bing).

Blekko was founded in 2007 by Rich Skrenta, Tom Annau, Mike Markson, and a bunch of former Google and Yahoo engineers. Previously, Skrenta had built Topix and what has become Netscape’s Open Directory Project. For Blekko, his team has created a new distributed computing platform to crawl the web and create search indices. Blekko is backed by notable angels, including Ron Conway, Marc Andreessen, Jeff Clavier, and Mike Maples....

In addition to providing regular search capabilities like Google’s, Blekko allows you to define what it calls “slashtags” and filter the information you retrieve according to your own criteria. Slashtags are mostly human-curated sets of websites built around a specific topic, such as health, finance, sports, tech, and colleges.  So if you are looking for information about swine flu, you can add “/health” to your query and search only the top 70 or so relevant health sites rather than tens of thousands spam sites.  Blekko crowdsources the editorial judgment for what should and should not be in a slashtag, as Wikipedia does.  One Blekko user created a slashtag for 2100 college websites.  So anyone can do a targeted search for all the schools offering courses in molecular biology, for example. Most searches are like this—they can be restricted to a few thousand relevant sites. The results become much more relevant and trustworthy when you can filter out all the garbage.

The feature that I’ve found most useful is the ability to order search results.  If you are doing searches by date, as my students were, Blekko allows you to add the slashtag “/date” to the end of your query and retrieve information in a chronological fashion. Google does provide an option to search within a date range, but these are the dates when website was indexed rather than created; which means the results are practically useless. Blekko makes an effort to index the page by the date on which it was actually created (by analyzing other information embedded in its HTML).  So if I want to search for articles that mention my name, I can do a regular search; sort the results chronologically; limit them to tech blog sites or to any blog sites for a particular year; and perhaps find any references related to the subject of economics. Try doing any of this in Google or Bing

The problem is that content on the internet is growing exponentially and the vast majority of this content is spam. This is created by unscrupulous companies that know how to manipulate Google’s page-ranking systems to get their websites listed at the top of your search results. When you visit these sites, they take you to the websites of other companies that want to sell you their goods. (The spammers get paid for every click.) This is exactly what blogger Paul Kedrosky found when trying to buy a dishwasher. He wrote about how he began Googleing for information…and Googleing…and Googleing. He couldn’t make head or tail of the results. Paul concluded that the “the entire web is spam when it comes to major appliance reviews”.

The Importnace of online reputation management

When companies or folks fall prey to unfair competitors, irate ex-employees or disgruntled consumers, then a SERM gets to be critical within the economic survival of a business.

Firms like SERMs are necessary in keeping, and in some circumstances salvaging and restoring providers or person's popularity and very good title.

Via the internet searches are one particular with the primary things that present day day consumes do prior to investing cash using a enterprise or person, and a single bad click can imply economic disaster to get a internet business, especially within this ever developing cyber financial state. Popularity for these SERMs are boosting by leaps and bounds using the realization it isn't prudent to attempt to conduct corporation in this cyber age rather than possess a SERM on retainer alongside your accountant as well as your lawyer.

Businesses are also appreciating the collateral advantage of acquiring a Reputation Management firm on-board as an integral a part of their business enterprise product, its amazing advertising! Whereas securing a company's beneficial popularity and name via the internet, it generates fantastic press and positive exposure that ultimately adds greatly to the bottom line of a company's harmony sheet, producing the services to actually pay out for itself in many conditions.

This tends to become a really strong marketing level for corporations also as individuals, to know that they are cleansing and defending their reputations and cyber photos, while concurrently running an extremely productive promoting initiative. At times corporations fully disregard their former marketing efforts via the internet and go for the advantages of Over the internet Popularity Management.

Possessing a SERM firm on your aspect is with no a doubt the way in which to go within this cyber age. For further information and facts on online reputation management and corporate reputation management, Please visit us at http://removeripoffreports.net/

foreclosure list

Washington (CNN) - As Washington watches and prays for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, it remains a time of herculean issues and complex debate. Yes, we know it's a new, Republican House, but what did they actually do in their first week? There is a significant list, filled with change and easy-to-miss tricks.

Listen here or read below to see our breakdown.

This week, in the podcast we also look at how to erase government debt. We analyze, piece by piece, how one town government took car of a looming $1 million deficit. Finally, we check-in with a woman trapped in the maze of loan modification. If you want to understand the foreclosure mess, listen.

So, what did Congress do last week?

Senate: This is easy. The Senate met for one day (Wednesday) and then adjourned until January 24th. The battle is staged for a debate on the filibuster, but first, the Senate went back home.

The House: Three main things happened. Republicans changed House rules. The House voted to cut is spending. And lawmakers opened up the next health care debate. Let's get into specifics.

1. Rules changes.

Overall, Republicans made some 53 changes to the rules last week. Here are the most significant ones.

- The thee-day rule: It was a Democratic pledge (yes, it was broken), now it is an official House rule. Non-committee bills must be posted three days before the House votes on them.

- Committees: Must now post vote results within 48 hours, make text of bills/amendments available and provide both audio and video of meetings.

- "Cut as you go": Any proposal with a cost attached must cut that same amount of spending from elsewhere in the federal budget. Differs from Democrats "Pay-Go" because Democrats allowed members to propose tax or fee increases to pay for their bills.

Loophole alert: Republicans exempted the Bush tax cuts, a fix for the Alternative Minimum Tax and current estate tax levels from this requirement. The GOP does not consider tax cuts "spending." They argue it is money that belongs to taxpayers. However, by allowing tax cuts to happen without finding the money to compensate for them, this policy could add trillions of dollars to the national debt. Republicans have not yet said how they would offset the decrease in revenues specifically but say they believe that lower taxes boost the economy.

- Must vote on the debt: The new rules eviscerate the so-called "Gephardt Rule," which allowed congressmen to raise the national debt as a side effect of voting on other, budget legislation. Now House members will have to vote separately on whether to raise the debt. (Note: the U.S. is expected to hit the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling in early April or May.)

- Budget "super tsar": The rules give unprecedented power to House Budget Chair Paul Ryan, R-WI. He can now write the budget proposal on his own, without a vote from his committee.

2. Spending cut

The House voted 410-13 Thursday to cut its own office budgets 5 percent. The Appropriations Committee, known for its beefier staff and budget, will be cut 9 percent.

- Amount Saved: $35 Million.

- Cut per Congressman: About $75,000 or the equivalent of one staff member.

- Thirteen Congressmen voted "no" on the cut, all Democrats: Ackerman (New York), Clarke (New York), Conyers (Michigan), Ellison (Minnesota), Filner (California), Honda (California), Jackson (Illinois), Lee (California), Moran (Maryland), Payne (New Jersey), Schakowsky (Illinois), Towns (New York), Woolsey (California).

3. Health care debate, round five

The House voted 236-181 Friday to hold a least a day of debate on repealing the health care law, known as the Affordable Care Act. This sets up another eyeball-to-eyeball vote on the law, possibly next week.

Four Democrats voted with Republicans on the procedural vote Friday and are expected to vote for repeal itself.

Those were: Dan Boren, D-Oklahoma, Larry Kissell, D-North Carolina, Mike Ross, D-Arkansas and Mike McIntyre, D-North Carolina.

What do you think about the 112th House's first week? Any of the other rules changes I should add? Leave a comment.

You can also listen to American Sauce on iTunes or subscribe to the podcast via RSS.

QOTD: "Even before the dead were buried, the left was attempting to use this tragedy for political purposes, even while the high-minded leftist punditry called for a discussion of the state of our "political discourse" (thinking that conservatives would be hurt by that discussion).

Turns out that the left and the punditry were far, far off-base factually in trying to blame Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, Fox News, George Bush, etc. for the shooting. We now learn that this guy is a nutcase who is, if anything, a lefty. (Professes admiration for the Communist Manifesto and disdains the U.S. Constitution, plus he has been obsessed with Rep. Giffords since 2007, well before Palin even arrive on the national scene.)

The left made a gamble here -- that the facts that would come out would support their anti-conservative speculation. That gamble failed . . . badly.

Soon, folks, after we've paid our proper respects to the dead and considered the facts that have emerged, let's consider what the shameless and distracting conduct of the left indicates about who is to be entrusted with the levers of power in this country, going forward." -- Commenter on E.J. Dionne's disgusting column

Making Free Money Online

With the start of a new semester and a new year, we all have high hopes as students for how this semester is going to turn out; what better way to improve our grades and overall performance in school than with the help of a few great apps. These are five applications that are great for students of all ages, but especially for students in high school and college. With more than 300,000 apps readily available in Apple’s App Store, it can be a daunting process to find the ones that are really worth the memory space on your device and, more importantly, worth the money. Here are five apps that range in price from $0 to $4.99 and are, without a doubt, worth your money. These apps give you what you pay for and so much more.

First is myHomework (free) which is a great way to keep all your assignments organized, accessible and easily searchable. You can enter tests, labs, papers, presentations, readings and more for any class, and set reminders before the due date, leaving no room for “forgetting” an assignment.

There have been studies that have proven students who study with flashcards are often more prepared for tests, and with Flashcard Touch ($4.99), you can now be one of those students. With this application you can create unlimited flashcards from your own definition or numerous online definitions.

Keeping a list of things to do is an effective way of staying organized, and being organized is one of the many keys to success. With PTO, Put Things Off, ($1.99) you can add tasks, organize them by importance, and even “put them off” until a later time. As someone who loves making check lists, this app has become a must-have for me and has helped me keep track of what I need to do in a simple fashion.

As a student who commutes to school, I know how expensive it can be to fill up your gas tank so frequently. With Cheap Gas! (free) in the blink of an eye, I have been able to find conveniently located gas stations with remarkably low gas prices, whether I am at school or at home.

Last semester a professor of mine told me listening to music increases productivity while studying. Although I’m sure he wasn’t referring to the type of music I listen to, I took that advice and ran with it. The Pandora (free) application has also become a must-have app. I’m not a huge fan of listening to the radio because they overplay songs, play tracks I don’t like, and have too many commercials, but with Pandora I can customize my own radio station for free with far fewer commercials.

You can’t go wrong with these five applications, and if you use them properly you will almost certainly feel more successful in no time. What could be better than using your phone to improve your performance in school?  Click here for more apps for students.

Every day, more and more people go online to find a way to make money. Here are some ways you can exploit the power of the Internet.

Once you have done this take some time to gather all the things you already have, and no longer want or need, and begin to list them on eBay. Be sure to take good pictures and descriptions of your articles are great. Thereby significantly increasing your sales.

Learn Affiliate Marketing – Affiliate marketing is big and growing fast now. If you do not know anything about this strange way to make money, takes time to learn all this. Affiliate marketing is basically when a person is committed to promoting company products and / or services. For each sale generated from that person to receive the commission. There are many people making full time income and just affiliate marketing. Sounds crazy right? Well, actually there are millions of people around the world who earn their living in earnest with the powerful method of affiliate marketing. Could be one of them?

or if you aim big you can even advertise with Google Adwords and pay only if someone clicks your add:http://google.com/adwords4. Consider me your real business friend and start your first link exchange with my blog: ad my link to your blog or website and I shell do the same adding your link over here on  http://realbucksonline.blogspot.com/ Also consider that I will post a new method of making real bucks online every week so stay connected here via bookmark or RSS feed.
Ok: I am just a average guy like you, who aims to make a real buck on the net.
Now let*s face it: it is hard enough to put cents on cents in a few ptc sites and expect to earn a decent living by that. Plus that all this so called business to be payed to click it*s like rolling the dice: you*re never sure finally you get the money. So what*s the catch with this game?
The most important thing in it is to get referrals : directly or rented ones. And the second important thing is to relay on the most trusted and stable sites. This is like betting on the most probable winner with a Team of Betters behind you.
Now,the first rule in business is to MEAN it. Not necessarily to be mean but to be serious about it. So if you think to make a living online you must be serious, hard working and learn it every step of the way. By all means you will get to SUCCEED IN TIME. With the second important thing, related to paying and stable sites you can get help from average experience or custom search on the net for top paying sites on Google. The really heavy duty thing is to build a Team of Referrals. According to this, the most affordable approach is to rent them with the amount of money you already earned on a site. The difficult part is to convince a direct referral to join in your   downline and be active on every day. This is like direct-sales in the real world: 50% chances (or less) to make them buy something which is more a game than a business. The rest of 50% is advertising or make believe (super-fantasizing) that something is useful and generates a sort of monthly real income. This fantasies go from promises of other great deals to even promises of 10(ten!) dollars per click:) And believe me, there are sites which ”offer” more than that, even the moon from the sky, just to get you join their scam. There are two kind of experiences related to this ”make believes”: one is to be a realistic guy by nature and the second is to try things until they prove lies. Everyone is preferring the first category except the advertisers, who are preferring the second one. Well, if you want to really be in the first category, and play this ptc game, you have to discern between a real buck and a promised one, in Neverland. You may say that each and every dime is just a promise in the ptc virtual world, until that dime profs it*s real in your pocket. It*s true but that does not mean you stop discerning reality from dreams. You must keep your goal to make real money online, gather experience and build a system that really works keeping you satisfied with your decent earnings and little, indecent losses.
That is why I thought of a system for everyone to get referrals. Scroll down and find out how much you will pay for it!
(just kidding Stay tuned on this site and you will found it soon. Have a winning day everyone!

Free Making Money

He and several other high-ranking officials in the organization, including GM Jeff Ireland, seemingly traveled cross country because they felt a sense of urgency with talks between Harbaugh and the 49ers becoming serious.

The Dolphins are going to be a tough franchise to battle for the 49ers. They have some of the deepest pockets in the league. People can say whatever they want about the character of a man or what they might do. It's a lot different when a team is offering you more money than most see in a lifetime.

Even if the 49ers can compete with the Dolphins' offer, which was something to the tune of $7 million, Jed York can't compete in a bidding war with Ross, who is in the top 70 richest people in the world.

The 49ers could give Harbaugh the keys to the franchise. They can remind him he is a superstar in the Bay Area. They can feed him lines about the new stadium, where the franchise is headed, the talent, how much they need him, but he's likely to go with whoever pays him.

The sense of urgency has already allowed Harbaugh to see a salary he might not have even dreamed would come his way. Why wouldn't he just sit back and watch the price tag go up. His best bargaining chip right now is that he is a hot commodity.

Forcing teams to feel like they have to give more and more to reel him in is making them do just that. Nobody is backing off yet, and until teams stop throwing incentives at Harbaugh, he should make everyone believe he is highly interested in everyone.

Until teams start to pull back the reigns, the ball is 100 percent in Harbaugh's court. This will be a fun week for Harbaugh, and he shouldn't cut it short by prematurely signing any deals. The Dolphins looked past the fact they have yet to fire head coach Tony Sparano and throwing record money at him before he coaches one professional game. Other teams may come knocking, and even if they don't, Harbaugh is going to be living comfortably, as one of the league's wealthiest and most powerful coaches.

Grab your popcorn and Twizzlers, because 2011 is already shaping up to be an exciting year to watch startups and giants do battle for market share and big ideas. If you’re not sure which companies to look out for in the coming year, our writers and editors have submitted their expert picks below.

What do you think? Did we miss any promising tech companies (new or established) that you see making a big splash in 2011? We want — nay, demand — your forecasts in the comments below.

1. Minimal, Inc.

This Chicago-based design firm finished off 2010 by completing the most successful funding campaign in Kickstarter history. Its TikTok+LunaTik iPod Nano watch conversion kits raised more than $940,000 from more than 13,500 backers and garnered the kind of attention that should help launch this company to new heights in 2011. The gadget accessories market has a new player.

~ Josh Catone, Features Editor

2. StumbleUpon

OK, so StumbleUpon has been around since 2001, so it’s not new to the scene. But with Digg’s fall this year and StumbleUpon’s planned release of premium features and publisher pages early this year, it has the potential to scale and be exposed to more users. And considering it’s a big source of traffic for many news sites, it may start investing its time into figuring out how to leverage the site further and connect with its community on the site.

~ Vadim Lavrusik, Community Manager

3. Amimon, Inc.

This Israeli company has perfected its wireless HDTV system over the past years. Imagine plugging a tiny USB device into a laptop, and then displaying its output in full 1080p HD resolution on a monitor 100 feet away, with no lag. Amimon has already introduced one of its own products, but the big deal is the presence of its superior wireless HD standard (known as WHDI, or Wireless Home Digital Interface) chips built inside numerous other products, such as laptops, projectors, TVs and set-top boxes.

~ Charlie White, Senior Editor

4. Bloom Energy

If there is any company poised to revolutionize the energy market, it’s Bloom Energy. The Bloom Energy Server (a.k.a. the “Bloom Box”) changes inputs like natural gas or oil into clean, reusable energy. It’s actually a dynamic fuel cell that creates energy through a chemical reaction. The company has raised more than $400 million to date and is testing its technology with Google, eBay, Wal-Mart and others.

~ Ben Parr, Co-Editor

5. Skype

Its recent outage notwithstanding, Skype has been on an impressive run since its breakup with eBay. Usage is at record levels, and features like group video chat and deep Facebook integration have reminded us that Skype is a top tier consumer and business web company. In 2011, the company is likely to go public, and with it, face a whole new level of scrutiny and expectations. Google will also continue to gun at Skype with enhancements to Google Voice (free U.S. calling for Gmail users through 2011 is an obvious sign of that), making the company all the more intriguing to watch.

~ Adam Ostrow, Editor-in-Chief

6. Tumblr

With $30 million in funding in its coffer and increasing content curation (not to mention 14 book deals born from its blogs), Tumblr could be shaping up into a much more organized — and ad-worthy — hub for entertainment. We’re interested to see if the company spends that money wisely — and how.

~ Brenna Ehrlich, News Editor

7. Clicker

The connected device ecosystem is still evolving, in large part because of the battle over control between content publishers, device makers and consumers. Clicker is managing to avoid the battle itself and is instead focusing on making it easy for users to find content, irrespective of what service that content might use. The company recently branched into recommendations and has mobile apps, supports Google TV and the Boxee Box and has a killer web app.

~ Christina Warren, Mobile & Apple Reporter
